The Dressing Table Gets a Bench - Finally!

This post has been coming for a long time. 

You may remember my Dressing Table Makeover from last year. 

I loved the result, but the problem was, it had no bench. When I thought I found one, that project went sideways (you can read about it HERE) , and I was still left with a bench-less dressing table. 

Fast-forward to last summer and a yard sale that I saw advertised online.  The picture showed a little bench that looked like a great match. The problem was, it was already noon and there was a good chance it was already sold.  Being the eternal optimist, I grabbed the hubs and said, "We're going to a yard sale!"  Off we went and when we arrived, the bench was still sitting there.  I tried not to act too excited, because I wanted to dicker on the price....it came home with me!

I forgot to take a 'before' picture (no complaining, I've warned you about this), but let me describe it.  It was painted white with a light gray microsuede seat.  Not my style, but the legs were the right shape.  Here's a pic after I started to work on it:

I had to know if there was any decent wood under all that paint, so I stripped the paint off of the top using Citristrip. I was pretty pleased with what I found, so I did a little sanding and gave it a few coats of tung oil.  

It wasn't a perfect match to the dressing table, but it was close.  The rest of the legs were painted with black chalk paint and an accent of antique gold acrylic paint. 

The paint was sealed with polycrylic and the hard work was done.  Or, so I thought....

When I took a closer look at the cushion, I discovered the light grey cover had been attached with at least 200 staples.  

 My neck and shoulder were screaming by the time they were all removed.  At this point, I decided to leave the tapestry-looking fabric on.  It was clean, didn't smell, and I just couldn't deal with pulling anymore staples! 

I found a pale green fabric with an embossed pattern. It was a great match for the decoupaged parts of the dressing table, so out came the staple gun.  

A new cover was installed in a matter of minutes.

Finally, my Dressing Table Makeover was complete!

Like I said, not a perfect match, but pretty darn close!  

I'm so glad I was finally able to complete this project.  Now, if I could only finish all the other ones.....
