How to Upcycle a Candle Jar
We have a wonderful local shop that makes the best soy candles and once I burn down the candle, I hate to throw out the jar. Let me show you what I do instead!
Welcome to the Creative Craft Hop hosted by Sara from Birdz of a Feather. If you just came from her blog, welcome to the Cottage! At the bottom of this post I'll direct you to the next stop on this hop, but be sure to visit all of the other stops too for some amazing inspiration. They will all be listed.

Before we get started, I have to tell you that this was not my original project for this hop. The original one was a clear wine bottle craft that involved cutting the bottle. Sadly, the cutting part did not go according to plan and I didn't have another clear wine bottle in the house. Even though my husband offered to go to the store and buy another bottle of wine (he even offered to help me drink it!) I knew I would be challenging fate in the cutting department.
Soooo, today I bring you Plan B!
You only need 5 things:
Mod PodgeTissue paper I love this paper and I also used it on my bookcase.
Lace trim
A clean candle jar
Let me share a little trick for getting your jar clean. Put it in the freezer for a few hours. Any wax that is left in the jar will pop right out. Then you can wash your jar with hot, soapy water.
First, cut a piece of tissue paper a little larger than your jar.
Brush some Mod Podge on your jar.
Lay the tissue paper on the jar and use some plastic wrap to smooth it.
After it dries, give it one more coat and repeat the smoothing process.
Trim the excess tissue paper from the bottom of the jar.
Fold the excess paper at the top into the jar and use an emery board (or sandpaper) to trim away the extra.
Then use a little Mod Podge on your finger to smooth down the edge.
Add some trim to the top edge of the jar. You'll notice this isn't the same trim from the first picture. I remembered this one and decided to use it instead.
Let everything dry...
...add some fairy lights, and admire your work!
How's that for Plan B?
Don't forget this is a hop so it's time to visit Gail @ Purple Hues and Me. Once you've stopped by to see her, be sure to visit all of the others for more inspiration! Here's the list:

So glad you were able to pivot your project Ann; it turned out beautiful! Your husband is so sweet to offer to help. Do you think you'll try your original project again when you have another wine bottle?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sara. I will definitely try it again. After all, there's next month's hop!
DeleteSometimes having one thing go south and having to pivot creates something beautiful. It sure did in this case! Super pretty!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteSorry.... the anonymous comment above is me... having google issues.
ReplyDeleteGoogle does that to me sometimes..so annoying!
DeleteAnn, your candle craft upcycle is beautiful! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much...and it was so easy to do!
DeleteI love your decoupaged candle jar, Ann! It is so pretty and the colors of the tissue paper is very vibrant! So many will paint the piece first when decoupaging, but I prefer the clear look of glass better - especially when lit! Yours is quite lovely!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gail. I really love this tissue paper and I think it was perfect for this project!
DeleteThis turned out wonderful Ann! I love working with Mod Podge and creating new uses for items around the house. Love the flowered paper and lace. I need to invest in some lace, I like the special touch it adds to projects.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Cara. Flowers and lace are at the top of my 'favorites' list!
DeleteSo pretty Ann, and a happy accident! You really turned a lemon into lemonade! The lace trim around the top is a great idea. I love to decoupage things, I will be shopping my house to find something to makeover!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly was a happy accident. Decoupage is one of my favorites - along with lace trim!
DeleteIt turned out so nice. I love how the candlelight shines through it.

ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachel. The freezer trick works every time!
DeletePlan B turned out beautiful! I can feel your pain on the original plan gone wrong though, ha! I have lots of empty candle jars because I never want to throw them away, so this is great inspiration. It's great hopping with you. Pinned!
