Denim Pocket Organizer

Welcome back!  Today I want to share an organizing idea that was made from the leftovers of another recent project.  If you follow me, you'll remember The Christmas Mermaid project.  It was the perfect gift for my daughter and left me with another half for a new project.  Behold:
It was time to create some organization!

Yes, this started out as a large gift sack and after using the one side to create The Christmas Mermaid banner, the second piece was destined to be an organizer.
There was already a channel across the top for a dowel.

After the side seams were opened, they were restitched and the second side was ready for a makeover.
I knew I wanted my scissors displayed across the top, so I cut a length of denim from a pant leg, folded under the edges and started to fit it.  The left edge was pinned in place and each pair of scissors was put in place before pinning a seam line.  When all the pins were placed, each seam was sewn and the scissors fit perfectly.
I chose some pockets from old jeans and began placing and sewing them.  I chose thread to match the pockets and sewed along the already-existing seams.
Here's a peek at the back, showing the different colors of thread used:
Once all the pockets were in place, I cut a dowel to size.
After painting it and the two wooden balls for the ends, it was inserted into the top channel, the balls were glued in place, and the second red cord (that came with the gift sack) was tied in place.
Time to fill it up!
My markers found a home in this pretty pocket while the one below it became the home for my notepads and pens.
The one to the right of it holds my exacto knife and some hole punches.
The two pockets on the right side of the banner contain small files, an old toothbrush, emory boards (they 'fill-in' when I can't put my hands on a piece of sandpaper), stenciling and other assorted paint brushes.
But, my favorite pocket of all is this small watch pocket:
It contains one of my small tape measures - something I reach for all the time!

I've always wanted to create an organizer that hangs on the wall and finding that gift sack gave me the perfect opportunity, especially since I've been saving old jeans for a while now!
I think my favorite part is the scissor storage.  What's yours?

I hope you'll pin, share, comment, and follow.  If you click on those 3 little lines at the top left of the blog (on the Home page), you'll see where to find me...or click on the icon below to share.
