Vintage Sewing Pattern - Thrift Store Challenge

It's time once again for Ten on the 10th.    The theme for this month is Thrift Store and this group of blogger friends will share their ideas that cost under $10.  Are you ready?  Here's what I found at the Thrift Store for a quarter, that's right 25 cents!
As soon as I saw the outfits I knew it was vintage and then there was the price of 65 cents.
Can you believe it?
Have you priced sewing patterns lately?
I still wanted to know what year it was from and the back did not disappoint:
That's right, 1964!
I knew exactly what I was going to do and it started with all the pattern pieces.  After I pulled them out, I ironed them to remove as many creases as possible.
I started cutting squares that were 8"x10" and stacked 8 of them.  Then it was like being in elementary school again, making tissue paper flowers.  I started folding the stack accordian style:
When the whole thing was folded, I tied a chenille stem around the middle:

Each of the ends were rounded with scissors:
And the layers of tissue were lifted and fluffed until it looked like a flower.  I made a few of these, some different sizes and the looked perfect in that empty pitcher of mine that you saw a few weeks ago.
I know you were worried about that empty pitcher!
The cost so far? 25 cents!  I had the chenille stems in my stash...but I wasn't done yet!  I thought the envelope was beautiful and the colors were still bright, so I grabbed an 8x10 inch canvas at the dollar store and got to work.
After painting the edges black with some acrylic paint, I distressed and decoupaged some of the instructions onto the surface.
When it dried, I added a piece of turquoise cardstock and the front of the envelope with more decoupage medium.
Taa-Daa, artwork for the craft room!
Total cost:  $1.25
I just LOVE a good bargain, don't you?
Now, this is Ten on the 10th, so hop on over to all the other blogs to see what they found at the Thrift Store!

  1. Adorable! I have a huge bag of sewing patterns that belonged to my cousin's grandmother. Making flowers with some of the tissue is a great way to use some of the patterns and it would look good in my sewing room. I also love the art that you created!

  4. This is precious. I hope that someone did something fun with all the patterns I have given away. It's just not economical to sew clothing anymore. I love this. It's darling.

  5. Hello Ann and Happy 10 on the 10th!!!!!!!!!! Love the sweet pattern decoupage pieces you made today. What a good idea to use the old pattern pieces to make flowers ~ I would never have thought of that. My favorite I think is the pattern cover layered over the pattern instructions. Genius!

Thanks so much for the great ideas! Pinned all to various boards of mine for you. <3

    Happy almost Valentine's,
    Hugs,
    Barb :)

      Have a wonderful week!

  7. Very clever! The turquoise version on the pattern package looks just like the outfit I got to appear in a school program in the square dancing segment. I think that was in fourth grade! It was trimmed with silver rick-rack. Of course, my outfit was store-bought as my mother didn't sew. #HappinessIsHomemade

    1. $18...huge difference from 1964! I do a little sewing, but mostly curtains and crafts. It's just too expensive. Coupons and ibotta save me every time!

  10. Love the pattern flowers and what great art work! I have several patterns that I keep and use as tissue paper for gift bags. But I love them so much it's hard to give them up so it's only my closest friends that get that tissue! ;)

You've inspired me to make some artwork out of the envelopes! Love this idea. Enjoyed hopping with you today.

  18. We have the best thrift store in Powell River, BC. It is the Economy Shop run by volunteers for the Hospital Society. There are lots of things for a quarter and I've found many treasures and things I've needed that would cost a lot more in a retail store. Thanks for sharing this fun blog sharing activity. - Margy
