Cupcake Potholder Tutorial

If you're like me, potholders take a beating in the kitchen.  They end up stained, burned, and looking pretty humble after a while.  That's the state mine were in, so I bought some fabric and got busy.  WARNING:  This post has LOTS of pictures!
The patterns have been in my stash for a while, but in addition, here are the things you'll need:  contrasting fabric, matching thread, cotton batting, Insul-Bright, pencil, chalk, scissors, sewing machine, ribbon (optional).
Start by placing your patterns on the wrong side of the fabric and trace with a pencil.

You will now layer the pieces in this order:  one piece of batting, one piece of Insulbrite, and the two pieces of fabric with right sides together.
At this point, you are going to cut an opening in the top piece of fabric only.  This will be for 'turning' after you sew the pieces together.  
Do this for the cupcake base and the top.  Next, pin your layers together and sew along the pencil lines.
Sorry for switching back and forth from the base to the top with pictures, but I'm trying not to overload the post with pics!
Next, trim close to your stitching with scissors:
Here's the top sewn and trimmed:
Using the opening that you cut, turn each piece right-side-out.
After turning each piece, I took them over to the ironing board and pressed them.
I'm sure, at this point, you're wondering about those cuts you made and what to do about them.  You're going to hand-sew them closed.  Don't worry about being neat because they will be hidden when the two pieces are put together.  Take a look:
Now it's time to topstitch the cupcake base.  I started in the middle and made lines one-inch apart with chalk.  
Pin a piece of ribbon on the cupcake base for hanging. 
Place the top over that, matching the edges (remember to place the two hand-stitched openings facing each other).  Pin and sew the two together.
Don't forget to take the pin out that was holding the ribbon in place!

Your potholder is done!  There are so many looks you can get with this potholder.  I went with a fun, playful look with this one, but I think they'd be elegant with a toile or floral fabric.  If you don't have a pattern, you can follow these instructions with a square and a rectangle.  

 Spring has finally sprung around here and it's garage sale weekend.  I can't wait to see what treasures I can find!  There is also some other news on the horizon...stay tuned, it's not official yet!

      Can I tell you a secret? The original instructions said to leave an opening at the side for turning...and it looked TERRIBLE! I just couldn't get it smooth, so I did it MY way! LOL

      Thank you, Becky. The base is 9 1/4" high X 8 1/4" wide at the top and 5" at the bottom. The top is 8 1/4" wide X 5 1/4" high.

Wine Cork Wreath

Just a note...I promised to share the wreath and picture in a previous post.  Here they are: Now, if you're anything like me, you've been saving wine corks for forever because there is a fabulous project that you will just HAVE to make with them.  The problem is, you haven't found it yet! Have no fear, your project is here! To get started, you will need lots of these: How many, you ask?  I estimate that I used between 200 and 250 corks.  You will also need a straw wreath, like this: Don't forget to remove the plastic! This next step is extremely important! How To Decoupage Dresser Drawers - With Napkins!

Welcome back!  Last week you saw a garage sale dresser transformed with paint and decoupaged napkins.  If you missed it, click here .  Today I have a little tutorial showing how it was done.  Let's get started, shall we? The drawers were sanded down to bare wood and the edges were painted black to match the rest of the dresser.  The napkins were found at the Dollar Store. Notice they are 2-ply napkins?  You only need one, so separate those layers! Iron the one-layer.  It helps when you are ready to lay it down on the wet decoupage medium.   Since the napkins were not wide enough to cover the entire drawer, I was going to have to piece them together.  These napkins also had a very definite pattern that was going to need matching, so it was time for some measuring.  I found the middle of the drawer and matched it to the middle of the napkin.  Then I marked the edges of the napkin on the edge of the drawer with chalk.  See the white (chalk) dot? No More Polycrylic for My Tables!

Behold, my newly refinished table - once again!  Yes, this is the second time this little beauty has been refinished. The table was originally refinished in 2013.  I carefully sanded, stained, and sealed it with polycrylic.  Everyone in blogland was singing the praises of polycrylic, so I thought I'd give it a try.  It went on great, clean-up was easy, and it dried quickly.   Win-Win, right?  WRONG!! After about a year and a half, I started noticing some wear on the edges of the table.  You know, the spot where people rest their arms?  As time went on, these spots actually started to feel a bit sticky and you could see them: It was really difficult to get a picture of them, but, if you look carefully where the arrows are pointing, you'll see dull spots in the finish.  We lived with it for a while, then I told my husband, "As soon as the weather gets nice, this table has a date with my sander!"
