Easiest DIY Ever!

This is a follow-up post to my recent Making Curtains From Vintage Petticoats post and, yes, this actually was the easiest DIY ever!

You may remember this window film.  It was old, faded, and dirty.

This picture makes it look so much better than it actually was - Trust me!

The problem was that while it did provide privacy, it had to go.
That's why I made those curtains
.
.
.
With the curtains made and up, it was time to get that window film removed.

Now, I'm going to be perfectly honest with you.  I was prepared for the worst:

First, those screws probably would not come out...
OR
...if they did, the frame would be stuck to the door with some type of permanent glue.

If I was able to jump those two hurdles, I was convinced the glass would be covered in adhesive, resulting in spending an inordinate amount of time scraping it off with Goo-Gone and a razor blade.

Why so negative?  Because, sometimes, that's just how things go.  You're all set to complete a quick and easy project and all of a sudden, the project that should have taken minutes, takes hours.

Can you relate?

Those fears set aside, we got started.

Using our cordless screwdriver, the screws came out easily.
Hurdle #1 - Handled!
Time to lift the frame off.  It DID stick a little at the bottom however, a little encouragement with my fingernail released it.
Hurdle #2 - surmounted!

The moment of truth - Did this vinyl have an adhesive backing?
NO, it did not!
I may have done a little 'Happy Dance" at this point!

The only thing left to do was clean the glass, scrape off some paint (former rental house problems), and reattach the frame.
Hello little cordless screwdriver!

Everything was put back together in no time at all and it was so nice to have more light filter in while still having privacy.

Sometimes the stars align and everything goes according to plan!

  3. Ann, you know that when you think the worst about something being difficult, it usually never turns out that way! And having just used some faux stained glass material on a recent project, the film is usually applied with water or a wet surface - BUT, I added glue around the edges since I didn't trust using water, lol! I do love, love, love the way your curtains look! Your cottage is really coming together beautifully!

    1. You are SO right, Gail! I just didn't know about that film and with all the 'former rental property' discoveries we've had, I assumed nothing. I really love the curtains, too. Thank you so much for your sweet comment!

  4. It's funny how the tasks we dread often aren't as bad as we think they will be but then the ones we often think will be easy... aren't! Glad this one was easier than you thought.

  12. Oh, I really liked the stained glass look and I came here because I wanted to know where you got it from. I will have to take your word for it that it looked worse irl. The curtains are lovely too. I have a window door in my bathroom that I have curtains on as well. It is an old, old house and someone back in the day probably needed to replace the bathroom door and just used an outside door they had lying around. It actually looks really neat, so I left it and just added the curtain.

I've seen bathroom doors like yours in old houses. It's always fun to see what was done in those older houses!
