Updated Hydrangea Tile Tray

I realize it's August and many bloggers are jumping into Fall and Halloween content with both feet.
Not this gal!
Summer is a very short season in my part of the world and I plan on enjoying it for as long as I can.  Soooo....
Let me share this beautiful hydrangea tile tray that I found at a yard sale for $2.
Hydrangeas are one of my favorite flowers and I knew I had to have this tray as soon as I spotted it.
Did I need a tray? Nooooo, but who could resist those beautiful pink flowers?
The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the wood.  A little too orange and it took away from those pretty tiles.

Some painter's tape was put down to protect the tiles and out came the sandpaper.
Goodbye orange and hello 'I'm not sure what' kind of wood and filler.
I usually like to keep wood, but this situation called for paint.  So I created a little sample board to see what would work best.
None of the pinks worked at all and clearly, the lightest green was the best match.
Let the painting begin!
I knew this color was going to be a bit bright and after the second coat, that fact was clear!
No worries.  I had a plan.  First, the grain was knocked back down with 220 grit sandpaper.
Then the bright green was white-washed to 'tone it down'.  (To white-wash, mix white craft paint and water 50/50 and brush it over your existing paint.)
Then a rag was used to wipe some of it off.
Once I had the right color, it was left to dry.
The tiles were covered with newspaper and the tray was sealed with two coats of clear satin spray.
Peel off the tape and paper and....
The tray has a whole new look!
Much better than the 'before'!
I think it's time to serve pink lemonade...

or ice cream...

because it's still summer at the Cottage!

    1. Thank you so much, Gail. You are so right; it's been super hot and the humidity has been stifling. Winter just lasts too long, so I'm hanging on to summer!

  4. Absolutely gorgeous Ann! The green really makes the flowers pop. The combo of pink and green always works. While I do love the colors of summer flower gardens, the season and I are not besties. The older I get the hotter it feels. lol. Which is why I bring summer colors into my home decor, so I can enjoy them all year round without the heat and humidity. During the dark, cold and snowy winters I'm living in a bright, warm, and summery home. I don't do seasonal decor, it's pretty much summer all year round.

    1. Thank you, Tuula. My color is usually blue, but I'm a huge fan of pink and green! It has been a strange summer and I do not like the heat and humidity either, but I just can't give in to Fall when it's still August. It sounds like you have the right idea for decorating...summer all year round!
