Ribbon Holder

As soon as I saw this plinth sitting on a table at a yard sale, I knew exactly what it was destined to become - A Ribbon Holder!
Trust me, I don't always have this much clarity when shopping, but this time I did!  The price was definitely right, so it came home with me.

Welcome to the 'Do It Over' Designers blog hop. We are a group of bloggers who love to recycle/upcycle/DIY.  I'm happy to host this hop and I hope you'll visit everyone to see what they have to share with you.  Their links will be listed at the end of this post.

Back to the project...
A little measuring with spools of ribbon showed me I could get 4 dowels on this plinth with ease.  I bought 4 dowels: a 1/2", a 3/8", and two 5/16" and marked the spots with pencil before drilling the holes. Sorry, no pic.  I haven't mastered drilling and taking photos at the same time yet!
The reason for the different sized dowels was based on the holes in the spools of ribbon.  I didn't want the larger ones flopping around.  Neatness counts, right?
The bottom needed a little TLC:
Some wood putty and sanding took care of that!
Out came the Peacock paint since it's for the Craft Room!
I used wax on this, clear wax and then dark, buffing until I got the color I wanted.  This picture shows the difference:
The 4 dowels were stained with antiquing medium and sealed with polycrylic.
Before attaching the dowels, I attached a piece of felt to the base.
How's that for color matching?
Trust me, it will never happen again! Ha!

The four dowels were tapped into the drilled holes and not glued for two reasons.  It's easier to disassemble for moving (remember, we're renting right now) and if one should break, replacement will be much easier!
The ribbon was added and it was placed on the floor for a pic.
Look at all that ribbon!
No, I do not have a ribbon problem, there's still have room for more!
The view from a different angle.
The 11 spools right in front are from a Hallmark Store that was closing.  I bought them for 25¢ each. Yes, there used to be more, but I used some of it.

OK, maybe I DO have a ribbon problem, but I now have great storage for it!
How do you store your ribbon?

  3. I love this ribbon storage idea for its' simplicity, Ann! You certainly had your thinking cap on for this one! It's also a great way to store wrapping paper, too! Unfortunately, I have lots and lots of ribbon that I keep in bins, on shelves and in clear trash bags! I can truly say, I'm the one with a ribbon problem, lol!

  5. I made this very same thing quite a few years ago - great minds think alike! My only challenge was everytime I wanted to grab a spool of ribbon for a project, it was always on the bottom!! I also love ribbon and just sold a huge bag of leftovers at a garage sale!
