Perhaps a clear oiling, then a wax polish..? Find someone who knows this stuff. Being DECO [I love that design!], the wood is likely a hardwood - you mentioned that it was heavy. Try sticking a pin in some benign spot, to check its hardness. From the tone, I'm going to go with WALNUT..?
